Dolores Hill – OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Mission is GO for TAG: Final Update Before Sample Collection!
September 26 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft mission has passed many milestones on its way to near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. The team has overcome unforeseen obstacles including boulders in its path and pandemics. Important discoveries have been made all along. We learned how to navigate in a microgravity environment around the smallest Solar System object ever orbited, about ground-truth comparisons of distant astronomical observations and asteroid materials up close, dynamic particle ejections from Bennu’s surface, and new understanding of “rubble-pile” asteroid formation and history in the Solar System.
The never-before-tried Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) is about to make its first sample collection attempt known as the TAG Maneuver on October 20, 2020. If all goes as planned, it will be the largest sample return for our country since the Apollo missions brought back moon rocks – and our first from a well-studied asteroid. We expect the returned sample to reveal even more important details about its parent asteroid and organic materials important to life. We invite you to share this exciting moment!
Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in Tucson, AZ and provided technical support to space missions and LPL laboratories.
In addition to her work analyzing meteorites, she has a lifelong interest in amateur astronomy. Dolores is a longtime member of the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, co-founded the Sunset Astronomical Society in Midland, Michigan and was a member of the Warren Astronomical Society in the Detroit-area. Cranbrook Institute of Science played an important role in encouraging her interest in science. While living in Michigan, she and her husband, Rik, enjoyed attending many regional amateur astronomy conventions where they met many lifelong friends. Near-Earth asteroid (164215) Doloreshill is named after her. She looks forward to seeing samples of near-Earth asteroid Bennu in 2023!
